  6. What is it?
  7. -----------
  8.  
  9. ZipEE is a desktop front end for the InfoZip compression and decompression 
  10. utilities Zip and Unzip. That is, it allows the use of these command-line  
  11. programs in the desktop environment, with drag-and-drop file zip encoding and  
  12. expansion.
  13.  
  14. Features include the following:
  15.  Simple drag-and-drop compression and decompression of files.
  16.  Allows many options to be set, including compression level and encryption.
  17.  Can provide information on zip files before unzipping them.
  18.  Allows you to verify and add files to existing Zip archives.
  19.  Allows you to extract or delete specific files from Zip archives.

  21. How is it used?
  22. ---------------

  24. Simply drag any file or directory to the icon bar and ZipEE will present you 
  25. with a standard save box. Name the file and drag to the folder you wish to save
  26. the Zip file in and the file/directory will be Zipped. If you have several 
  27. files to zip, you can either place them in a directory and drag this directory
  28. to the ZipEE icon or use the 'Use current Zipfile' option (see below) to add
  29. files to the first Zipfile created.

  31. If you need to decompress a Zipfile (type &DDC), drag it to the icon bar and
  32. drag the save icon to the directory you wish the file to be decompressed to.
  33.  
  34. If the files you wish to Zip or Unzip are not typed correctly, you can force
  35. ZipEE to perform the correct action using the 'Force Zip' or 'Force Unzip'
  36. options from the iconbar menu. Thus, you can unzip a file transferred from a 
  37. Windows machine without having to change the type from DOS to Archive. If you
  38. want to find information on a Zip archive, select 'ZipInfo' from the iconbar
  39. menu and the drag the file to the iconbar icon.

  41. What are these funny boxes on the screen?
  42. -----------------------------------------

  44. Because Zip and Unzip are command-line programs, if they want to communicate 
  45. with the user, they have to open their own windows to do so. Thus, when using 
  46. ZipInfo or if there is a problem with the input Zipfile, or any other 
  47. parameter, you will get a message from the relevant program.

  49. 'Choices' window
  50. ------------------

  52. If you click select or adjust on the icon bar icon, or select 'Choices' from 
  53. the iconbar menu, the choices window will open. This allows you to set various 
  54. parameters. Note that you must press the 'Set' button for the settings to take 
  55. effect. The other two buttons at the top should be obvious - they reset all the
  56. options to the default settings, and save your choives to disk for use as 
  57. your standard settings (note that some settings are not saved - the current 
  58. Zipfile, temporary file and passwords, for obvious reasons).

  60. Zip:
  61.

  63. - Compression level: from 0 (store only) to 9 (best compression, slowest).
  64. - Don't scan Image files: treats archives etc. as single files, not 
  65.   directories.
  66. - Convert to DOS filenames: useful if decompression is to be done on a PC.
  67. - Recurse directories: if set, Zip will travel down directories when zipping.
  68. - Junk paths: if set, Zip will not store any directory information (all files 
  69.   will appear on the same level in the zip file).
  70. - Move files: DANGEROUS - this moves files into the zip file; that is, it 
  71.   deletes the original file.
  72. - Use current Zipfile: any files dragged to the icon bar will be added to the
  73.   current Zipfile, rather than being made into a new one. The current Zipfile
  74.   is shown in the 'Current Zipfile' window (see below), which opens when this
  75.   option is chosen.This window can also be opened using the button next to this
  76.   option.
  77. - Freshen Zipfile: greyed by default, this option is available only when adding
  78.   files to the current Zipfile. The Zipfile will only be changed if the file(s)
  79.   dragged to the icon bar are newer than the versions in the Zipfile.
  80. - Update Zipfile: as for 'Freshen', but adds files not present in the Zipfile
  81.   as well as freshening files.
  82. - Specify temporary file: if running from a floppy disk or nearly full disk, 
  83.   you may need to tell Zip where to store its temporary file.

  85.   The default setting is a compression level of 6 and set to recurse 
  86. directories but not image files.

  88. Unzip:
  89.  
  90. - Never overwrite files: if there are multiple files with the same name in the
  91.   zip file, only the first will be unzipped.
  92. - Prompt to overwrite files: you will be asked which files you wish to keep if
  93.   several have the same name.
  94. - Don't prompt to overwrite: only the last file with a given name in the zip 
  95.   file will appear in the output.
  96. - New directory: when selected, will create a new directory for the
  97.   decompressed files. This directory will have the name in the 'Save as'
  98.   dialogue box (if not selected, the name entered in the dialogue box is
  99.   irrelevant).
  100. - Freshen: files will only be output if they are newer than the versions 
  101.   currently on disk.
  102. - Junk paths: all files will appear on the same level in the output directory.
  103. - Unzip specific file: when clicked, this opens the 'Current Zipfile' window 
  104.   (see below). If a Zipfile is active (i.e. a file has been archived or a 
  105.   Zipfile dragged to this window) then you can enter a filename in the lower 
  106.   icon and this file will be extracted to the location you select (by dragging
  107.   in the usual way).

  109.   The default setting is to prompt when overwriting files.

  111. ZipInfo:
  112.  
  113. - Names only: only the file names will be extracted.
  114. - Names and size: the file names will be given with an indication of the 
  115.   compressed and uncompressed size of the archive.
  116. - Full info: names, sizes and other information is given for each file.
  117.  
  118.  The default setting is 'Names and size'.
  119.  
  120. General:
  121.  
  122. - Password: this will encrypt the zip file (it can only be decompressed if the
  123.   correct password is used). Note that when typing in these icon, all
  124.   characters will appear as * for security; ensure that the same password is
  125.   typed into both icons - ZipEE will warn you if they are not.

  127. 'Current Zipfile' window:
  128. -----------------------

  130. This window gives the name of the current Zipfile (set when a new Zipfile is
  131. created by Zipping a file or by dragging a Zipfile to the window), allows you
  132. to get information in this file and allows you to extract specific files from
  133. this Zipfile.

  135. To set the current Zipfile, drag a Zipfile to the window. If this is typed
  136. correctly (&DDC) or 'Force Zip' is set in the iconbar menu, the name of the
  137. file will appear in the top box. Pressing the 'Info' button will run ZipInfo,
  138. in the same manner as dragging a file to the icon bar with 'ZipInfo' set.

  140. To verify a Zip file (check its integrity), click the 'Verify' button.
  141.  
  142. To extract a specific file, enter its name (as it appears in the ZipInfo 
  143. results) in the lower box and press 'Unzip'. Drag the icon from the save box 
  144. to where you want the file to be created as normal.

  146. To delete a specific file, enter its name (as it appears in the ZipInfo 
  147. results) in the lower box and press 'Delete'. The file will be deleted.
